Consumerism and Following Christ
Alan Hirsch says that consumerism and a life of consumption is the single greatest threat to the practice of discipleship in our world today. When we live to consume rather than living to serve and give, then church becomes nothing more than a vendor of spiritual experiences and religious services. Instead of being the church, we go to church. We go to one church for the preaching and teaching. We go to another church for the worship. And we go to another for their outstanding children's and youth programs. We end up consuming rather than following Jesus. Our mantra becomes "Feed me! Wow me! And care for my kids!" instead of "Jesus is Lord!"
